We will revitalize the area of the bus stop and restore the adjacent greenery behind the Žilinská bus stop. This will add a lot of greenery to the whole area, which will create a pleasant space not only for people waiting for their connection, but also suitable for those wanting to sit down.

The area of the public transport stop and the green area behind this stop will get a new look. With the help of greenery and new street furniture, a multi-purpose central area with the character of a small urban park square for short-term relaxation will be created.

The bus stop is located at an important transport point for both pedestrian and public transport. It is an important transit point for people living in the area or visiting the popular nearby market. In its vicinity, there are important institutions such as the Slovak Radio, the Government Office and the Slovak Technical University. It is also used by locals and tourists heading from the Central Station to the city centre.

This project is part of the Programme for the public space revitalization in Bratislava – Vivid Spaces. It is the first-ever framework for a systematic change of the public space of the capital on several levels. The scheme is implemented in cooperation with the capital city and the city districts. The project is also made possible thanks to the cooperation with the ČSOB Foundation.

Revitalisation plan

How Did the Project on Žilinská Street Come About?

  • The project on Žilinská Street is intended to make waiting for public transport more pleasant and to revitalize the public space behind the stop. It creates a small transit park space with functional links to the surrounding area.
  •  In the past, there were trees in this area that were in poor health and encroached on the tram protection zone. Due to this protection zone, it is not possible to plant trees in the space where the park meets with the public transport stop.

How is the greenery in the Žilinská Street Park project going to change?

  • The winning architects proposed to install a steel pergola made of a cable system in the space next to the public transport stop, which shall be overgrown with wisteria which will provide shade. This will create a “green passage” above the station’s boarding area. The space will be safer in the evening through the tree canopy and the illuminated pergola structure covered with climbing plants.
  • The revitalization of the space brings newly designed planting beds, water-permeable surfaces and a new structure for climbing plants. Sunny and semi-shaded positions will be enlivened by flowering grass communities and mown lawns.
  • 4 trees with a crown radius of 1.5 m will be planted in the park. All existing trees will remain in the park and will be professionally treated. 226 m2 of new perennial-shrub planting will be added. The shade at the bus stop will be created by a pergola surrounded by wisteria on an area of 192 m2. New street furniture will be added. After meeting with the citizens, we agreed that the current shrubs and roses would be replanted to another more suitable location within the park.
  • The existing grass area will undergo a comprehensive revitalisation and over 800 square metres of grass will be restored.

What Are the New Advantages of the Space on ŽIlinská Street?

  • New greenery
  • Residential function in the shade
  • New lighting and security
  • Addition of street furniture
