In the Dúbravka district, we are engaged in a project for the renovation of the area in front of the Dúbravka's Dom Služieb department store. The space is to serve as a public area for a short-term stay of visitors to the Dom Služieb and transit from the nearby public transport stop.

The neglected public space around the Dom Služieb in the Dúbravka district will be transformed into a pleasant place with a water area where people will want to spend their free time. The reconstruction is a part of the Living Spaces initiative, which aims to modernise and improve long-neglected public spaces in Bratislava. The Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava, the city of Bratislava and the Dúbravka district cooperate in the project.

The new proposal for revitalization was prepared by architects from Atrium architekti, ARZ and LIVINARK. Their ambition is that the renewal of this place will have a positive impact on the life of the whole district. In the visualizations, they showed the surroundings of the Dom Služieb without visual pollution and also proposed to create a space for a mural on the side of one of the adjacent apartment buildings. The study has so far only outlined the future shape of the place and the exact details will be known only after the project documentation, which is currently being worked on, has been prepared.

The new dominant feature of the space is to be a large water area with a residential function. It will be a paved concrete surface on which water will runoff. According to the architects, the water area on the estate will improve the climate and become a popular place especially for children in the summer months. A lawn will be grown next to the fountain, which people may use for relaxation, simple sports or sunbathing. The architects proposed to install benches and add lighting along the sides of the lawn. New trees will also be planted in the area.

A multifunctional pavilion will also be added to the site, which can change functions based on need. For example, it will be used for the occasional local markets that currently take place at Dom Služieb. Various community events and smaller sporting events can also be held there.

This project is part of the Programme for the public space revitalization in Bratislava – Vivid Spaces. It is the first-ever framework for a systematic change of the public space of the capital on several levels. The scheme is implemented in cooperation with the capital city and the city districts.

Cooperation With Municipal Districts

The projects in the city districts are part of the projects for the improvement of public spaces by Bratislava City and the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava. The city aims to improve the quality of roads, sidewalks and public spaces for all Bratislava residents throughout the city.

Architects from Atrium s.r.o., PLURAL s.r.o., Studený architekti s.r.o., who have been chosen from an architectural competition, will work on the projects. Six architectural teams have been chosen from the competition and will work with the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava on the creation and renovation of the city’s public spaces over four years.
